Chiefs agree to send franchise player Allen to Vikes
I love Jared Allen and I’ll miss him in red and gold, but I really feel like this is the right move for a Chiefs team that’s rebuilding, trying to get younger, and has a lot of needs. By my count, this gives the Chiefs six first-day picks and 13 picks overall — and that could be 14 or 15 if the Chiefs decide to trade out of the 5th pick overall. That’s a lot of picks, yo. Here’s hoping Chris Long is there at number five.

Howard Schultz plans to sue Clay Bennett to get Sonics back
I dunno if it’ll work, but it’s step one in my suggested plan (Schultz sues to get the team back and then hands it over to Ballmer). It may go a little ways towards restoring Schultz’ reputation in Seattle, too — especially if he actually manages to get the team back.

Clay Bennett sent e-mails indicating his plan was to move the Soncis — from day one
Clearly, this evidence suggest Clay Bennett is a jackass who never had the best intentions of Seattle or the Sonics in mind — but we already knew that. The big question is: what does this mean to the future of the team in the Emerald City?
I don’t know, but I’ll tell you what I hope it means: I hope it means Howard Schultz can sue the bejesus out of Bennett for breach of contract and hand the team over to Steve Ballmer, who would be a freaking great owner. Fingers crossed.

Self tells Oklahoma State he’s not leaving Kansas
Kansas coach Bill Self said Thursday he will stay at Kansas instead of going to his alma mater Oklahoma State. And to anyone who thought he’d leave: I told you so. :)

KU to play Virginia Tech in Orange Bowl
Wow, Kansas ends up in a BCS bowl game after all. Hells yeah! Some people (myself included) believed Kansas needed bitter arch-rival Missouri to win in the Big XII championship game for the Jayhawks to still have some BCS hope. MU got thumped hard by Oklahoma and KU is going to the Orange Bowl anyway. This basically proves two things we should have already known:
- 11-1 is better than 11-2.
- There is never — and I mean never — an excuse for Kansas fans to root for Mizzou. Never.

Kansas, Missouri rise to 2, 3 in AP poll
This is so fucking awesome. For those who aren’t from the Midwest, let me set this up for you: There is a bitter, bitter rivalry between these two schools, and even the two states themselves. People from kansas generally don’t like Missourians, and vice-versa. It goes all the way back to the civil war, wherein Kansas was a free state and Missouri was not. Both schools are traditional basketball powerhouses and generally bad in football. This year, Kansas is undefeated and Mizzou has just one loss — and they play each other this weekend at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (basically, half way between the two schools). This is set to be one of the most awesome college football matchups in a long, long time. It’s pretty rare that this bitter of rivals are playing with the stakes so high. I’m so stoked.

Lokesh Dhakar: Baseball Pitches Illustrated
Really nice infographics that show the movement of various baseball pitches. Beyond the ones everyone knows (fastball, curve, slider, etc.), it goes into some of the more obscure pitches (slurve, circle change, palmball, etc.). Very handy reference, and beautifully illustrated. Nice looking site, too.

Miracle in Mississippi
Unbelievable last play of SCAC (NCAA D-III) title game between Trinity University and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi on Saturday. With 0:02 remaining, Trinity players used 14 laterals to go 61 yards for the game-winning TD. This is the stuff backyard dreams are made of. Crazy.

First preseason NCAA rankings released: KU number four
UNC, UCLA, Memphis, Kansas, and Georgetown. Kansas is now in the top ten in both football and basketball at the same time. I wonder when the last time that happened was (Early 90s? For those not aware, KU is a traditional basketball powerhouse and football laughing stock).
A&M; and UT are the only other Big XII teams in the top 25. Weird. K-State just missed the list, though, at number 26.

BCS computers say Kansas better than USC, Florida
KU is now ranked 15th in both polls, and 13th in the BCS standings — ahead of USC, Flordia, and Missouri.
Now, I don’t for one minute believe that my Jayhawks are better than the Trojans or the Gators — at least not yet. But it’s still exciting, nonetheless. If you do the math, this means Kansas truly has a chance to play for the national title this year, if they run the table.
Now again — I don’t necessarily expect them to run the table. The next two weeks are going to be tough road games, and they’d also have to beat Mizzou at Arrowhead and the Big XII South champ (probably Oklahoma) in the championship game. So, let’s not get too excited just yet — but I’ll be damned if the dearth of football prowess at KU for the last 15+ years doesn’t make this more fun than going to the Final Four (year after year after year). Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

NFL fines Belichick, takes Pats draft picks
Ouch — The Pats lose their first round pick next year if they make the playoffs, and their second and third if they don’t. That’s a huge penalty — and there’s also $750,000 in total fines to go along with it. Wow.

Accidental APIs: NFL edition
My former co-worker Matt Croydon cleverly looks under the hood of NFL.com’s in-game update Flash app, and finds it’s powered by JSON-formated versions of the data — meaning it’s there for the taking. Makes me wonder how many “accidental APIs” are out there, if we check out the source XML and JSON files for various Flash widgets.
