jQuery finds its way into Microsoft and Nokia stacks
Wow. Big win for jQuery. Microsoft is apparently planning to distribute the JavaScript library with Visual Studio, and make it the sort-of go-to library for .NET development. I’m still of the mind that backend development frameworks like .NET (and Django, and Rails, and Cake, and Java…) shouldn’t be in the business of “preferring” a particular front-end library, but you can’t really deny that this is a Really Big Deal™ for the jQuery project.

CounterNotions: Why Apple doesn’t do “Concept Products”
A really nice piece on “concept” products, such as those we see all the time from car companies, Nokia, Microsoft, and the like:
> It turns out that when capable designers are given real constraints for real products they can end up creating great results. In Apple’s case, groundbreaking products like the iMac, the iPod and the iPhone. Constraints have a wonderful way of focusing the mind on the fundamentals, whereas concept products can often have the opposite affect.
Design is all about constraints, and concept products inherently remove most of them. Apple seems to spend most of its time focusing on products I can build today (or in the near future), rather than on what might be possible 10 years from now.

Is this the successor to the Nokia N800?
This little guy would be hot! I had a Nokia 770 and my old co-worker Matt had an N800, and I’m here to say these are great little devices. The screen on these bad boys is still the best I’ve ever seen. I love my iPhone, but it’s 160dpi looks downright blurry compared to the 220dpi sweetness that is the N800’s screen.
The N800 has a pretty decent virtual keyboard, but I’ve always liked the Sidekick-style form factor this possible successor has with the retractable physical keyboard.
The thing Nokia, and most other vendors don’t seem to get yet is: it’s the software, stupid. The software is what makes the iPhone amazing, not the hardware (not that’s it’s a fair comparison — the N800 isn’t a phone).
That having been said — Maemo (the OS that runs on the 770 and N800) is not bad at all — it’s not iPhone-sweet, but it’s better than most mobile OSes out there.

The Register: Nokia N95 review
As I’ve said here many times before, this is the only phone I’d consider over the iPhone (but I’m still planning on getting an iPhone). The N95 looks really great, and it’s built-in GPS, 3G, and much higher-res camera than the iPhone do make it somewhat tempting.
In the end, though, I feel like the iPhone is better suited to my needs. It obviously will play more nicely with a Mac and it’s a bit more focused on web browsing, IM, and e-mail (and less so on multimedia), which I what I anticipate using the most.
Still, the N95 is badass, and really the only other smartphone worth considering, as far as I’m concerned.

Nokia N95 photos on Flickr
This is the only phone not called the iPhone I still drool over when i see it. Everything else looks so mundane by comparrison to the iPhone now — but this thing is still pretty damn hot. I think I’m going to get an iPhone myself, but this would definitely be my second choice. And, it would probably be my top choice if either photography or 3G connectivity was really high on my value list.

Up close with the Nokia N95
Even though it looks like the iPhone is the mobile device for me, I can’t deny that the N95 is still hot, especially if you want more serious camera optics on your phone. The iPhone rules, but this is the next best thing. Love the two-way slider design.

Nokia N800 Internet Tablet
Nokia’s update to the 770 looks pretty badass. not sure there’s enough new stuff here to make me upgrade from my 770, but it’s hella nice, nonetheless. I love the new form factor. If you’ve never seen a 700, the 800x480, 220dpi screen in these things is the most amazing screen you’ll ever see.

How Nokia can knock the iPod from its perch
“Apple’s greatest threat isn’t Microsoft. It’s Nokia.” Couldn’t. Agree. More. The N91 is hot, and I’d pay just about any price to get my hands on an N95. Apple not only needs a cell phone pronto, but they also need that phone to be able to compete with the likes of Nokia, who has been making cellular phones for over 10 years now.

The Nokia N95 is so hot. Definitely the most desirable phone ever made, if you ask me. Really, who needs an iPhone?
