Seattle Karaoke Tour, take one
A couple months ago, one of the first couple times I hung out with my latest BFF @alixito, we jointly had the brilliant idea to do a week-long tour of Seattle plethora karaoke bars, hitting one each night for seven straight days. Today, Alix and I announce the first edition of Seattle Karaoke Tour, taking place from June 13th through 20th. Which is eight days, not seven. Because we’re badasses, that’s why. Sure, it’s no Whuffaoke (which you should totally try to attend, as well!), but we think it’ll be fun — not to mention challenging. Who has the stamina to make it eight straight nights? I guarantee I do. I believe Alix does. Do you? If so, we’ll see you at the following venues:
- Saturday, June 13th
- Boxcar Alehouse Magnolia/Interbay
- Sunday, June 14th (My birthday!)
- Hula Hula Lower Queen Anne
- Monday, June 15th
- Little Red Hen Green Lake
- Tuesday, June 16th
- Purr Capitol Hill
- Wednesday, June 17th
- Kate’s Pub Wallingford
- Thursday, June 18th
- The Rickshaw Greenwood
- Friday, June 19th
- The Beacon Pub Beacon Hill
- Saturday, June 20th
- Boxcar Alehouse Magnolia/Interbay
I’ll try to flesh this page out with more details (times, addresses, etc.) over the next few days.
Come as many nights as you like! Let’s spread the karaoke love across Seattle!

World Tour 2008: Slides and commentary from my recent speaking engagements
Over the past couple of months, I’ve been honored and excited to speak at five events in three continents. It was a lot of work and a lot of travel, but worth every bit. I’ve had the time of my life, met a ton of great people, and share and gained more knowledge than I ever could have imagined.
I’ve always been happy to post the slides I present at conferences, and the recent talks are no exception. However, besides regular hour-long conference talks, I’ve done some full-day workshops that attendees pay quite a lot more for, and I’m not as comfortable posting those. I hope you understand.
With that out of the way, here’s an overview of my recent speaking engagements:

Django 1.0 release party
Django 1.0’s release party will be at the Tied House in Mountain View on Saturday, September 6th at 7pm. I totally wish I could be there. Don’t feel sorry for me, though — I’ll be trying to find some hot karaoke action in London at the time. :)

Design for Mobile 2008 : September 22-24th, Lawrence, KS
This September, several industry leaders in the mobile web space, including my old boss Brian Fling, will convene on Lawrence, KS, the coolest little town you’ve never heard of, for Design for Mobile 2008. Should be a great event.

South by Southwest 2009
SXSW is back! And this time, they enlisted Blue Flavor to do some IA/UX work for them. Nick and Tom spent a great deal of time trying to get the IA for the site just right, and then SXSW took it from there with their internal resources. It’s definitely a big improvement, in my mind.

Future of Web Design New York 2008
Looks like the team at Carsonified has another great event planned. I had a blast at last year’s FOWD NYC. I wish I could go this year, but it doesn’t look like it’ll happen. You should definitely go, though.

Fall speaking schedule
As you may know, part of my job at Blue Flavor entails speaking at conferences, giving workshops, and so forth. This fall, I’ve got several events lined up, and I wanted to let you all know about them.
First, I’ll be giving a workshop on building Django apps on September 8th in London. I’m again working with Carsonified on this, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Having been to several of their events, I really believe no one out there runs web events more smoothly than Ryan and his team.
The workshop will be an introduction to Django and will focus on building custom content management systems, making use of Django’s automatic admin interface, generic views, and template language. It’ll be a full-day workshop, and there are seats for up to 40 attendees. If you’re interested, register now!

DjangoCon, September 6-7, 2008, Mountain View
The DjangoCon site is up, and features talks from Guido Van Rossum, Adrian Holovaty, Jacob Kaplan-Moss, Simon Willison, and more. Looks like it should be a great event.
Also, “Welcome to DjangoCon” sounds a lot like “Welcome to ZomboCom,” to me.

Webmaster Jam Session 2008 Session List
WJS 2008 looks like it’s going to be awesome. Last year, it had probably a better combination of fun and education than any other conference I attended. This year ought to be even better, as the event has moved to Atlanta, which, at least in my opinion, is a far better place than Dallas. Be there!

DjangoCon 2008
The first annual DjangoCon will take place September 6th and 7th at the Googleplex in Mountain View. It will coordinate with the 1.0 release of the popular web application framework, and will include a release party on Saturday night. There is only space for about 200 attendees, but the conference is free (you are, however, encouraged to make an optional donation to the Django Software Foundation to help cover costs).

Build a Custom CMS with Django: My Carson Workshop
I’ll be heading over to London, my favorite city in the world (so far, anyway), to give a full-day workshop on building a custom CMS using Django. The workshop is being put on my the awesome folks at Carsonified, and you can register right now, if you like! Having been to several Carsonified events, I can say with a great deal of certainty that no one out there runs conferences and workshops more smoothly than this crew. Should be a great day.
I will definitely blog at more length about this event in the near future, but for now, head over to the Carson Workshops site and check it out.

Webmaster Jam Session 2008
Webmaster Jam Session, one of the best web events I’ve ever been to when I spoke there in Dallas last year, is back this year and is moving to the ATL. Woo! Sorry, Big D., but Atlanta is sooo much more appealing! Anyway, I’ve again agreed to speak this year, and I can’t wait. Hope to see you all there!

Google I/O Web Forward conference
Good-sounding event for the development crowd (moreso than the design crowd). Features talks on JavaScript/AJAX, geo, APIs, mobile, and more from big names at Google including Guido Van Rossum and David Glazer. San Francisco, late May.

Tech N9ne in Seattle, April 3rd at Moore Theatre
My favorite rapper from back in KC, Tech N9ne, is coming to Seattle. I’ve got tickets. If you live in the SEA and enjoy mainstream-ish fast-rapping MCs with a dash of humor and another dash of vulgarity (think Eminem, Ludacris, E-40, and Twista), you might want to be there, too.
For what it’s worth, this is the guy responsible for my signature drink, the Caribou Lou, which is earning a reputation for taking out web nerds left and right at conferences and other geek events.
