Ben Tesch, one of several great web designers and developers just across the lake at MSNBC.com, is about to launch Cumul.us, a site which will aggregate weather data and use crowdsourcing to try to make better weather predictions than the experts. Who knows if it’ll work, but it sounds like a killer idea to me, and I can’t wait to see it in action.
Although I didn’t complain about SXSWi’s crowdsourcing of the panels last year, I definitely think with this year’s insane number of submissions, it’s not going to work very well. People with a “name” aren’t going to have a chance. Maybe that’s what SXSW wants. But with 683 submissions and only 80 slots, there’s no doubt in my min that it’s going to be nothing but a popularity contest. Oh well — there’s always the parties.
