DelveUI New York: Help me plan my talk in exchange for free tickets!
As I mentioned here before, I’ll be speaking in New York in a couple of weeks at DelveUI, a two-day event filled with sessions from some of the best UI designers on the planet, including Lou Rosenfeld, Jina Bolton, Scott Jehl, Andrew Maier, Jamey Kosoy, Jason Santa Maria, Ryan Stewart, Theresa Neil, Robert Hoekman, Joshua Porter, Anders Ramsay, and Todd Zaki Warfel. I think this is going to be a really, really great event.
My talk at the event will be about one of my favorite topics: web typography, specifically as it relates to CSS, and hopefully with plenty of new hotness from CSS3 thrown in. I’ve got the talk pretty well-prepared already, but I want to hear what it is you all would like to see addressed in a talk of this nature. So much so, in fact, that I’ve convinced the Delve crew to let me give 10 jeffcroft.com readers free registration for the event in exchange for your ideas. And if you’re too late to get one of the free registrations, I may still be able to hook you up with a juicy discount.

Delve Conference, Brooklyn, August 5th and 6th
I’m excited to be speaking at the inaugural Delve workshops in Brooklyn August 5th and 6th. DelveUI is a 2-Day Masterclass on Designing (Web) User Interfaces. Think of Delve as the antidote to the bloated conference experience — small, affordable, and frequent versus overwhelming, occasional, and costly. Each Delve consists of a series of two-hour masterclasses. That’s just long enough to get deep into a topic and just short enough to avoid people falling asleep at their desks.
This first Delve has a pretty killer lineup of speakers, including Lou Rosenfeld, Jina Bolton, Scott Jehl, Andrew Maier, Jamey Kosoy, Jason Santa Maria, Ryan Stewart, Theresa Neil, Robert Hoekman, Joshua Porter, Anders Ramsay, and Todd Zaki Warfel.
You can register on the Delve site. Hope to see you there!

Refresh Seattle returns with a really, really great speaker: Jared Spool. If you’ve not heard this guy’s spiel before, you owe it to yourself to not miss this one.

World Tour 2008: Slides and commentary from my recent speaking engagements
Over the past couple of months, I’ve been honored and excited to speak at five events in three continents. It was a lot of work and a lot of travel, but worth every bit. I’ve had the time of my life, met a ton of great people, and share and gained more knowledge than I ever could have imagined.
I’ve always been happy to post the slides I present at conferences, and the recent talks are no exception. However, besides regular hour-long conference talks, I’ve done some full-day workshops that attendees pay quite a lot more for, and I’m not as comfortable posting those. I hope you understand.
With that out of the way, here’s an overview of my recent speaking engagements:

What’s good in Sydney?
Michelle and I will be spending some 20 hours this Friday and Saturday traveling from Kansas City to Sydney, Australia, and I couldn’t possibly be more excited about it. Since I was a kid, Australia has been at the very top of my list of “places to go someday,” and the fact that I get to do it with Michelle, and as part of a great event like Web Directions South is a testament to just how great a life I’ve had the privilege of leading over the past several years. I love travel and I love meeting and exchanging knowledge with the wonderful people in the web community, so the fact that I get to do both on a regular basis is just amazing (also thanks to Blue Flavor, which not only lets me do this, but actually makes speaking at events around the world part of my job requirements). I’m so lucky.
As I said, I’m super stoked about going to Sydney, and I’m really looking forward to partying again with old friends like Jina and Josh, catching up with some great acquaintances like Scott and Cheryl and Daniel, meeting several of my tweeps in person for the first time, and also getting to know entirely new people.
Having just returned from London and not had a ton of time to plan out our trip, I’m looking for advice: what should we do while in Sydney?

Design for Mobile 2008 : September 22-24th, Lawrence, KS
This September, several industry leaders in the mobile web space, including my old boss Brian Fling, will convene on Lawrence, KS, the coolest little town you’ve never heard of, for Design for Mobile 2008. Should be a great event.

South by Southwest 2009
SXSW is back! And this time, they enlisted Blue Flavor to do some IA/UX work for them. Nick and Tom spent a great deal of time trying to get the IA for the site just right, and then SXSW took it from there with their internal resources. It’s definitely a big improvement, in my mind.

Future of Web Design New York 2008
Looks like the team at Carsonified has another great event planned. I had a blast at last year’s FOWD NYC. I wish I could go this year, but it doesn’t look like it’ll happen. You should definitely go, though.

Fall speaking schedule
As you may know, part of my job at Blue Flavor entails speaking at conferences, giving workshops, and so forth. This fall, I’ve got several events lined up, and I wanted to let you all know about them.
First, I’ll be giving a workshop on building Django apps on September 8th in London. I’m again working with Carsonified on this, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Having been to several of their events, I really believe no one out there runs web events more smoothly than Ryan and his team.
The workshop will be an introduction to Django and will focus on building custom content management systems, making use of Django’s automatic admin interface, generic views, and template language. It’ll be a full-day workshop, and there are seats for up to 40 attendees. If you’re interested, register now!

DjangoCon, September 6-7, 2008, Mountain View
The DjangoCon site is up, and features talks from Guido Van Rossum, Adrian Holovaty, Jacob Kaplan-Moss, Simon Willison, and more. Looks like it should be a great event.
Also, “Welcome to DjangoCon” sounds a lot like “Welcome to ZomboCom,” to me.

Webmaster Jam Session 2008 Session List
WJS 2008 looks like it’s going to be awesome. Last year, it had probably a better combination of fun and education than any other conference I attended. This year ought to be even better, as the event has moved to Atlanta, which, at least in my opinion, is a far better place than Dallas. Be there!

DjangoCon 2008
The first annual DjangoCon will take place September 6th and 7th at the Googleplex in Mountain View. It will coordinate with the 1.0 release of the popular web application framework, and will include a release party on Saturday night. There is only space for about 200 attendees, but the conference is free (you are, however, encouraged to make an optional donation to the Django Software Foundation to help cover costs).

Webmaster Jam Session 2008
Webmaster Jam Session, one of the best web events I’ve ever been to when I spoke there in Dallas last year, is back this year and is moving to the ATL. Woo! Sorry, Big D., but Atlanta is sooo much more appealing! Anyway, I’ve again agreed to speak this year, and I can’t wait. Hope to see you all there!

Cabel Sasser: Coda Confidential
I’ve had this one in my “to watch later” pile for several weeks, and I finally got around to it last night. Cabel’s one of the more entertaining speakers I’ve ever head the pleasure of seeing in person, and this talk about the development of Coda certainly lives up to that. He’s insightful, funny, and interesting. Check it out. In my opinion, Panic is still synonymous with great Mac software — even as I was never the target market for Coda and Expan drive has largely made Transmit unnecessary for me.
