Thank you, Sara!

Friends who hook you up with free lenses are the best kind of friends.

The 50mm f/1.8 is freaking awesome. I can already tell it’s going to be on my camera 90% of the time. Yay for prime lenses, big apertures, and shallow depths of field!

Sara, I owe you big time. I’ll buy you lots of free drinks at Southby. :)

Sweet! I just got one of these today, too! I love this lens. This lens is the reason I got a DSLR!

Me too, more or less. I was planning to buy one, and then dotsara just offered hers up for free, which is freaking awesome (she replaced it with the even more badass 50mm f/1.4).

Welcome to the prime side. Wow, did I just write that?

This is, by far, my favorite lens. It just makes bokeh pure fun.

Yep, it’s all I keep on my d80 until I spring up for a wide-angle maybe.

Also my main lens, which I’ve had since my last Nikon film SLR, and works great on my D50 too. It’s especially nice for available light. A couple of shallow-field shots I’ve really enjoyed that I took with it: Northern Voice 2008 - Buttons 12th Fret Harmonic Of course, now I want the Sigma 30mm f/1.4… silly tech-head that I am. I should probably just learn to work better with what I have.

    > Of course, now I want the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Mmmm, just bought one of those not too long ago. It’s awesome!

Cool. I noticed Dustin Diaz says he likes doing the shallow depth of field thing too….or something like that…tis cool (and very arty). ;)

    YAY!!! (: (Ha! prime side!)

I don’t know what you get more out of the 50 f/1.4 over the f/1.8 other than paying the extra ~ $200. The lens you got here is excellent and worth every penny. Btw, stickel, how are you liking your 30mm?

I played with the f/1.4 and I could tell that it gave me a bit more light intake, a bit shallower DOF, and maybe (?) a slightly closer focusing distance. But, give the price difference, I’d probably recommend the f/1.8 to everyone but the most demanding of photographers. The f/1.8 has got to be the best value in all of photography.

I think the differences between the 1.4 and the 1.8 really only start to show up when you’re shooting in low light. The 1.8 is a champ, for sure, but, having the 2 extra stops can be pretty helpful.
