I’d been there before, so I knew what I was getting myself into — that being about the lamest roadside attraction in the USA. But, we did stopped anyway.
Two things:
1. The Mitchell Corn Palace stop took about 10 minutes, maybe less.
2. At this point in the trip, we didn’t realize we were in such a hurry. The movers told us they would take four to seven days to arrive, and they got there in two. They called us — after this stop, but before the Missoula stop — and asked where the hell we were. We weren’t even half way there yet.
Brian - I think I’ll manage to survive the heartache…
Jeff - I’ve never been through South Dakota - when we moved to Missoula we drove west through Kansas and Colorado until we hit Denver, and hung a right. Is it faster through the Dakotas? (Not that I ever plan to make that god forsaken drive again, but I am curious…)
Well…not totally sure about going to Missoula, but from Lawrence to Seattle it was about an hour longer to go through South Dakota, Montana, and the panhandle of Idaho than it was to go through Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and the meat of Idaho. Most of that hour is driving from Lawrence to KC — which, as you’ll know, is actually out of the way. We choose that route because we thought it would be more intersting. We could stop at the Badlands and Mount Rushmore, and we considered Devil’s Tower, as well. We actually originally planned to stay overnight in Missoula, but we ended up more in a hurry than we thought.
So, that’s the long answer. The short answer is: I think it’s very slightly longer, but probably worth it. Most of South Dakota is pretty dull, but the western quarter or so is pretty cool, and the Badlands, in particular, are freaking awesome.
Denver, Salt Lake, and Boise aare all probably okay, but I’ve seen ‘em before (well, except Boise), and it just seemed less of an interesting drive to us.

So, wait — you couldn’t stop to talk to Mandi, but you can stop to hang out at the Mitchell Corn Palace? That’s — uh — unfortunate for Mandi.002 // Jeff Croft // 07.29.2007 // 7:45 PM

Ahh, memories :) I’ve only been there once, but somehow my dad went there three times in one summer. It’s quite a unique location.004 // mandapanda191 // 07.31.2007 // 6:58 PM
