This really nice post by Mike on getting into dSLR cameras also has a great comment thread with a lot of useful tips. I’ve often thought about taking the dSLR plunge, but I’m not yet convinced I would actually use one, if I bought it. Anyway, if you’re thinking about buying one and don’t know all the basics, red this thread.

That’s a good article Jeff - I’ve forwarded the link to a few friends who have recently asked me about getting a digital SLR. The article covers the subject very well.

I got my first digital SLR in 2004 and have never looked back due to the extra possibilities and quality it can offer in your final images, though I know people who have bought one and hardly ever use it!

If you ever took the plunge and got the ‘photography bug,’ then be prepared for a lot of expense as you buy more lenses - I now have to get permission from my girlfriend before I buy anything photography related… ;)

Besides cost, it was a big change to suddenly need a camera bag (which get bigger and bigger as you buy more lenses and want to take them out with you…) over the shoulder instead of having the compact camera in the pocket…not to mention tripods, which also get bigger and heavier as you buy bigger and heavier lenses (big white lenses in my case, being a Canon person)… :)
