While I’m not sure I agree with David’s assertion that being in the Bay Area can actually hurt your chances at being a successful web startup, I absolutely agree with the idea that there’s no need to be there — you can build a great web app just about anywhere.

I think it might be a good place to get your creative juices really going though, due to how regularly there seems to be conventions and meetings among the other developers. Here in the south west of England, I really envy that as there is very little like that here.

Just remembered this post by Leah Culver you might want to read on her thoughts of moving to the Bay Area. Sounds very positive from her point of view, but I guess she is a successful Bay Area start up.

Again, I think the Bay Area is a great place — I just don’t think it’s the only place. Seattle, for example, has a great web community and lots of events going on all the time, as well.
Leah’s great and certainly moving to the Bay has served her well — but do you believe she couldn’t have built Pownce in the Midwest? I don’t.
