Holy unnecessarily awkward scrolling content boxes, Batman!

  2. 002 // Brian Ford // 05.07.2007 // 3:35 PM

    Several more words:

Takes. Too. Long. To. Load. So. I. Gave. Up. And. Moved. On.

Brian, you nailed it. I think they coded it in the “Molasses” framework. Can’t even comment on the design, as it wasn’t finished loading when I my attention span tapped out.

One word: Cramped. I think I literally ducked my head when clicking in those little scrolling content boxes. My wife’s one word: Ewwww.

    Agree with everything said.

    My one word would be:

    Unfriendly.

  6. 006 // Kyle // 05.07.2007 // 4:35 PM

    Agree with everything said.

    My one word would be:

    Unfriendly.

Totally agree — serious yuck! Those scrolling content boxes are foul, and how many typefaces do you want on a page!?!

Seriously, Jeff — LJWorld whoops this… 10x over.

  8. 008 // Nathan Borror // 05.07.2007 // 5:36 PM

    You stole my words :)

  9. 009 // Bret // 05.07.2007 // 6:33 PM

    This is much better: http://abcnews.go.com/altindex

  10. 010 // Jeff Croft // 05.07.2007 // 6:39 PM

    @Nathan: No, I appropriated them. :)

@Bret: That’s more usable and a bit more comfortable, but it’s not engaging or interesting at all, either.

Ugh, I know. I wrote a lengthy post of my own about this (there’s a few hours of my life I’ll never get back).

One of the things I discovered is that the initial fat wad of JavaScript you have to download is just the tip of the iceberg; the scripts then download even more stuff. Grand total: 996 KB and almost a minute and a half over a cable modem. And don’t even get me started on the layout. Bleh.

Hopefully ABC will listen to the negative feedback and atone for this user-hostile design crime.

1996 called. They want their layout back.

At least, you can’t accuse them of copying Yahoo.
