Why are you surprised? I can’t see any reason why they’d bother with two photo services. Seems to me Photos has been living on borrowed time ever since the Flickr acquisition.
That’s precisely why I’m surprised. It makes perfect sense to drop Photos in favor of Flickr, which is why I never thought Yahoo! would do it. Witness Upcoming and del.icio.us — you’d think they’d roll these into their main suite of apps, but they show no signs of doing so.
So many things within Yahoo! rely on Photos (groups, 360, user profiles, etc.). It will be a major undertaking, I’m sure, to move all that stuff to Flickr. I think it’s the right move, but I never actually thought they’d do it. Yahoo rarely does what makes sense, especially when it comes to their acquisitions.
I’m sure you’ve heard by now about Microsoft making some moves to acquire Yahoo. If things don’t make sense now, think how bizarre they’d be under Redmond control.
I completely agree with Yahoo!’s decision here — Flickr’s definitely the place it’s at for photos. Though that part about letting user’s pick between other photo-sharing sites than Flickr is a little surprising to say the least.
What I’m really surprised (and a little alarmed) about, however, is:
Butterfield also confirmed that Flickr will “soon” allow users to upload videos in addition to photos.
I don’t know about everyone else here, but I’m not so sure that I personally would particularly want to upload videos to what has always been known as a Photo-sharing site. Surely that’s what Yahoo! Video is for (yes, yes, I know… that was what Y! Photos was for too, but still…)
