I grew up about an hour from Jena. The way the south functions (or dis-functions, as the case may be) is a complex and strange thing. Very difficult to describe.
One thing that’s interesting to me is that racism there is right out in the open, which makes it very easy to find the shame and hororor we all should. Elsewhere, racism is still common, maybe even prevalent, but it hides behind facades and code phrases.
