Ken Griffey Jr. hit the 586th homer of his career in the fifth inning Friday night, tying Hall of Famer and former Reds star Frank Robinson for sixth place on the career list. Griffey’s stats are just astonishing when you look at them and consider what an injury-plagued career he has had. If he has been less prone to getting hurt, he would have been far and away the greatest baseball player ever. We would all be saying, “Barry who?” And, seemingly, no steroids.

Griffey’s been a joy to watch all these years. I’m glad I still have several of his Upper Deck rookie cards. :)

Ha, yeah I vividly remember when the 1989 Upper Deck set came out and everyone trying to get that Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card.

Over the years I’ve had the good fortune to be around him in a non-sports situation quite a few times and all I can say is he’s legitimately a good guy. Really cool, nice, friendly, not full of himself, etc. If anything he’s just a bit quiet. I was really sad when he left Seattle, but he was so straightforward about it and cool that he’s still a hero here.

    The guy has class.

I’m from Cincinnati, and I’ve always been a huge Griffey fan. It’s amazing and sad how the fans in Cincinnati have turned on him. They view him as a bloated contract (even though the Reds are paying Eric Milton more than him this season), and many would be glad to see him traded. They fail to realize the we get a nightly chance to watch the sweetest swing the game has ever seen (it’s been called “baseball porn”). People here even debate whether or not he’s a hall-of-famer; I don’t understand how you could justify not voting for him. So, thanks, Jeff, for pointing out the milestone.
