Amazing, it seems like Apple has managed to meet demand for their precious little phone.I’m really anxious to find out if this means they didn’t do as well as they expected, or if it means they actually planned really well for once.
In any case, if Apple is now letting people buy four at a time, and they’re planning on giving away 15,000+ of them to employees in July, they must have made a shitton of these things.
I’m only slightly pissed at having waited in line for 5+ hours.

My guess is the latter.
Apple is kinda damned if they do, damned if they don’t, though. If they sell out, they’ll be criticized for not meeting the demands, based on the hype — and people will credit apple with the hype. If they don’t sell out, people will say it’s not selling very well — or that it’s not selling as well as Apple anticipated.
Carl Howe estimated that at one point they were selling around 30,000 an hour. He suspects they’ll sell around 500,000 total on the weekend. He speculates that they could do as well as 1 million.
But, yeah — I walked in the next morning and picked one up. With that said, there WERE still a ton of people purchasing. I’m interested to know what the ratio of 4GB to 8GB was. My bet is that most people didn’t even consider a 4GB version.

I doubt that, really. I think if the numbers are good and Apple still has phones, people will acknowledge that Apple sold a ton of phones and was able to keep up with demand.
Yeah. Jospeh (one of my LJWorld.com coworkers) went in today (Sunday) and the KC Apple store was sold out. So they did eventually sell them all, just not on opening day.
A rumor site had said it was 4:1, tending towards the 8GB. That sounds appropriate, but who knows if it was accurate or not.
At one point, an AT&T rep yelled down the 60-person-long line at the Lawrence AT&T store. “Is anyone planning to get a 4GB iPhone?” Not a single hand went up. I asked him why he was asking, and he said he was just curious. They never would tell us how many of each flavor they had. I know they had 42 phones total and at least the first 16 managed to get 8GB. We were numbers 13, 14, 15, and 16 and we all got 8GB without a problem. Not sure how many did or didn’t after us. I also know that store did sell out on opening night, which means they either had 8GB units for everyone (unlikely) or some people who came for 8GB phones settled for 4GB models (more likely — but damn I bet those people were pissed when they heard there were 8GB ones left in KC Saturday morning).

I was down on the Plaza Friday night to see Ratatouille (highly recommended) and the line was around the block. Crazy.
I’m told they managed to move more than 525,000 units over the weekend. Not bad for something so many people seemed so convinced would flop.
