The journalist as programmer: an Q&A with Adrian Holovaty

A nice interview with Adrian about the intersection of journalism and technology — a topic on which he might be the industry’s foremost thought leader. Especially noteworthy is the bit about structured data. One of the first things I realized when I started working in the journalism industry a few months back was that the primary product of news organizations — the story — is basically a piece of shit when it comes to providing data in user-friendly ways (searchable, sortable, etc.). The main job of most writers is actually to make your data dumber and less useful. Irony.
