Andy Clarke: CSS Unworking Group
Andy says that Opera’s latest filing against Microsoft is evidence that the CSS Working Group (which contains mostly representatives of the various browser manufacturers) must be disbanded and a new strategy put into place — one which includes more representation from designers and developers.
I’ve written about this before, so obviously, I generally agree with the general principles. However, I’m unsure what motivation browser makers would have to implement standards if they were less involved with creating them. And, quite frankly, I’ve pretty much give up on the idea of the W3C as a relevant body in our industry. The W3 basically feels to me like the 55 year old store manager who has been working at your local WalMart for 30 years. He’s slow, old, tired, obsessed with policy and procedure, and resistant to change — people just kind of let him think he’s in charge while the rest of the company moves on around him.
Bottom line: I generally agree with Andy, but I see no reason to believe a change will ever happen.

NYT Review: No Country for Old Men
A really glowing and well-written review. I saw the film a few days ago and loved it. Everything in this review echoes how I felt when I was watching it. But, I think the review makes one major omission: it fails to mention what I thought was the creepiest part of the whole production — there was a single note of music in it. The silence was deafening.

Anxiety: lightweight to-do management for Mac
I’ve only played with it for about 60 seconds, but this little app looks great, so far. Simple, fast, and uses the built in Leopard system-wide To-Do service. Love it, so far. Thanks be to Gruber.

CommandShift3: It’s like Hot or Not for web design
“Except, instead of clicking on hot babes, you click on hot websites.” Pretty cool idea, but why isn’t there a link to the web sites? It only shows a screenshot of the homepage, and I’d really like more context to make my choice — I want to be able to click through to the actual site. Still, pretty fun.

South Lake Union growth goes full throttle
This does it — I gotta move to South Lake Union. :)
> Hough-Beck and her husband sold their house in View Ridge after their daughter went off to college. They bought a 735-square-foot, one-bedroom condo at 2200 Westlake. Now she calls Whole Foods her pantry, considers downtown her playground, and looks forward to taking the streetcar to a float plane on Lake Union and flying to her Hood Canal beach house without getting in a car.

New in Django: template fragment caching
I’m not sure when this got added, but you can now cache any part of a template, simply by wrapping it in {% cache %} tags. it’s pretty configurable and looks franking brilliant. I can’t tell you how much easier this will make my life. :)

Young women drink, party, post
This is a story about young women who post photos of themselves performing silly, drunken acts like peeing on a waterfall or dancing on a table. Predictably, the old fart who wrote the story — as well as several who were interviewed for it — seems incredibly concerned that these young ladies are not thinking about the consequences of showing themselves in this state in public.
I, however, have a theory, which says there will actually be no consequences at all. Why? Because everybody is doing it.
I’m just realizing theory might be worth a blog post of its own, so I think I’ll stop there, and go into more details in a more fleshed out post in the future. :)

Jonathan Ive set to succeed Jobs as Apple CEO?
While I’m not sure Ive has the charisma and “star power” of Steve Jobs, he certainly does have Jobs’ extraordinary vision and taste (Jony might even best Steve in these areas). I’m not 100% sure Ive is the man, but I can’t think of anyone better, either.
The bottom line is, there’s not going to be anyone who can fill Steve’s shoes. Ive has a better chance than most.

Apple retail stores announced for fiscal ‘08
Apple’s adding several new stores, including one right in my old stomping grounds: 119th and Roe in Leawood, KS (a Kansas City suburb). This seems like a great location for an Apple retail store, as Johnson County is filled with the type of upper-middle class brand whores that probably loves them some Appley goodness (and I can say that, because I’m one of them, having grown up there). :)
According to Wikipedia, Leawood’s median incomes for males is $90,546.
