Frameworks are passing
A blogger wonders if your favorite pet framework will be gone by the time you get around to your next project. Adrian points out that having several large media companies depending on Django (many via Ellington) means there are people whose jobs involve maintaining Django. This should help give it more stability than many open source software projects.

Zen and the art of Ruby programming: Django is great
“Python has a few nice web frameworks, but I’ve fallen in love for Django.” and “The template system allows designers to define the UI without having to know how to program in Python.” Yup.

The B-List: Let’s talk about accessibility
James Bennett’s take on accessibility clearly outlines what accessibility is, and perhaps more importantly, what it is now.

Why designers don’t contribute to open source
Pretty accurate, I’d say. I actually think the open source projects that don’t have a ringleader are the ones that often suffer from terrible design. See both Python and Rails for examples of beautifully designed OSS projects that have strong leadership. See PHP and most early Linux desktop UIs for examples of ones that don’t. Good design is almost never done by committee. A certain level of dictatorship is almost always required.

The IROC will make it into production by late 2008, and will bring the classic Scirocco brand back into the VW lineup. This is really, really hot. I want one. Now.

Accessibility follow-up
Four days later, my previous post on accessibility continues to generate a lot of discussion. That’s a good thing. Unfortunately (and really, unsurprisingly), some of the more zealous members of the accessibility community found a way to manipulate my comments into things I didn’t actually say. Thankfully, some of the more level-headed accessibility mavens understood what I was getting at.
So, as a follow-up, I just want to reiterate my original points, remove the extraneous ranting, and see if I can’t make myself perfectly clear. Please do read on…

.Mac’s slow death
The folks that call for .Mac’s death are usually the same folks that don’t use it’s one killer feature: syncing. While I completely agree that the web apps that are part of .Mac are way behind the times and need to catch up, there is nothing else that keeps my five Macs in perfect sync at all times — and that’s worth every penny of my $100 per year.

Of snakes and rubies; Or why I chose Python over Ruby
Nice blog post from a former Rails developer who has switched to Python. He outlines various reasons, but the two biggest are performance (Ruby is slow) and library support (Python has a lot more).

It really surprises me that eight of the top ten cameras used on Flickr are digital SLRs. O f the remaining two, one is a “prosumer” model and one is an ultracompact. I’m surprised there aren’t more point-and-shoots on the list.

Django adds built-in search
Django gets a built-in search API! I’ve been calling for this since the first Django site I built. I’ve not actually tried it yet, and I expect that this, the first commit, isn’t perfect — but it’s a sight for sore eyes, nonetheless. Way to go, guys.

Has accessibility been taken too far?
There’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while but have a been hesitant to post, for fear of it being taken the wrong way, and fear of me being labeled as insensitive. But I’ve finally decided to just put it out there. I’ll be careful with my wording and try my best not to offend, but I can’t promise anything.
I’m concerned about the state of accessibility in our industry. I’m concerned that the web is being limited creatively by a growing crop of accessibility and usability zealots that, in my personal opinion, over-complicate the matter.
Has accessibility been taken too far?

Top 10 most beautiful cellphones
Pretty good list. That Black Diamond would place number one for me, but the $300,000 price tag sort of ruins it. What I think would be really beautiful would be a RAZR-sized device, but with the QWERTY that slides out from the side (a la the HTC designs), running S60 or Windows Mobile 5. That gets me hot.
