Wired’s Cult of Mac drops another year end top-ten list — and it’s a good one. Surprisingly insightful commentary on what’s to come from everyone’s favorite company.

Did YouTube Cut the Gordian Knot of Video Codecs?
“The codec wars are over, at least for web clips. Flash Video is the new internet video standard.” I definitely agree. It’d be nice if something with higher video quality (like QuickTime) had won, but it didn’t. Flash is the Internet video king. And web designers and developers better get used to it, because Flash’s dominance in video is going to pave the way for more and more Flash development in general.

Typies: 15 tips to choose a good text type
A nice set of tips on choosing a good typeface for body text. Nothing especially new here, if you’ve read books like The Elements of Typographic Style, but it’s nice to seem them all in one simple list. Well-done.

Alex Bosworth: How To Provide A Web API
Hmm, I wonder if a jeffcroft.com API would be useful? It sure would be easy, with Django powering it all. I suppose no one would really care, huh? :)

Bug: IE7 absolutely positioned italics
Stuart Colville disovers that IE still pukes all over itself when you use italicized text. Wasn’t using italics a solved problem in, I dunno, 1984?

Jakob Nielsen: Top Ten Mistakes in Web Design
Jakob’s ten most egregious offenses against users are mostly the same things he’s been railing on about for years. As with most Nielsen musings, his ideas are largely good, but his writing style, attitude, and absolutism are annoying at best and offensive at worst.

Digital Edge: 2007 Edgie Award Finalists
World Online has four nominations, and a cursory glance suggests close to half the nominees are running Ellington and/or Django. By my quick count, there are 13 Ellington-powered sites nominated in the 11 categories. Sweet!

Obvio Tribrid Sports Car: Electric Pocket Rocket Runs on Anything
I link this not so much because I’m enthralled by this car as because I’m excited that chances are looking so good for electric cars. The Tesla guys and a handful of others are showing that performance is not an issue. Within the next five years or so, there should be lots of electrics to choose from, even in America. Awesome.

James Brown dead at 73
James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul,” whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Christmas Day. He was 73. James Brown is amongst the most influential musicians of any genre. He will definitely be missed, especially by funk and soul fans like myself.

Happy Birthday, CSS
Given that I almost certainly wouldn’t have the career I do without you, I think you’re probably worthy of my birthday wishes, Mr. Cascading Style Sheets. It’s kind of crazy to think that you’re ten, CSS, and you’ve only began to really get legs in the last few years. Here’s hoping for more years of continued success as you move into the third phase of your life. Now, if we get just get someone besides Safari behind that third phase…

Researchers catch and film giant squid
Only a year ago, the existence of these giants was believed by many to be a myth. One was photographed last year, and now a live one has been filmed. The say the elusive creatures may be more plentiful than previously believed, to boot. Very cool.

WebFaction gives you cheap Django hosting for Christmas
Following the talk on John Udell’s blog, WebFaction has stepped up to the plate to offer mod_python/Django hosting starting at just $7.50/mo. Although I’ve not used it, I think it’s safe to say this is probably the best inexpensive Django hosting solution out there now. They specialize in agile framework hosting, have an easy, control-panel-based install, and have a screencast showing you how to get started with Django. Also a great option for TurboGears and Rails developers.
