Hold ‘Em: Why I hate calling
Although there are some incredibly successful no-limit Hold ‘Em players that make a living (quite literally) by calling a lot (see Daniel Negreanu), I believe that calling is almost always the wrong strategy for anyone who is less than an expert player.
Calling is generally a sign of weakness. But that is not the real problem with calling. The real problem is that you gain no information by calling. Poker is a game of incomplete information, and every action you make at the table should be made in an effort to gain more information about your opponent’s hand.

Windows Vista v. Mac OS X Tiger
Paul Thurrott’s comparison of Tiger and Vista beta one. He misses the important detail that Mac OS X 10.5 (Lion? Cougar? Lynx? Bobcat? Serval? Cheetah? Caracal? Ocelot? Domestic? hah) will be released by the time Vista is, but otherwise is pretty fair. Si

Sept. 7th Apple Event: My money’s on video.
I know the word on the street is that Apple plans to introduce the iTunes-compatible phone (reportedly manufactured by Motorola and sold by Cingular) — and they might. but I’m inclined to think Apple has something bigger up their sleeve. Consider:
- The invite to the upcoming event says, “1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again.” Would Apple really remind us that we had 1000 songs in our pocket a few years back when the iPod came out and then introduce a phone that holds only around 100 songs?
- The iTunes-compatiable phone is said to be a Motorola product, not an Apple one (Apple only made some software for it). I find it hard to believe Apple would be holding a huge event to intro someone else’s product.
- The hints that Apple is dropping suggests they feel they have a pretty revolutionary product on their hands. Is an iTunes-compatible phone such a thing? It doesn’t seem like it to me. iTunes on a phone seems like a natural evolution of an existing successful product. I think this event is more likley to intro an all-new product or product line.
My best guess is we’re finally going to see a video-capable iPod. You heard it here first. :)

Sony’s revamped T Series notebooks
God these things are sexy. Why doesn’t Apple make a competitor to them? I would be in absolute heaven if I could get a tiny PowerBook with 1366 x768 screen resolution…

Apple hinting at big things on Sept. 7th
Apple’s got a product announcement event planned for the 7th, and they’re making it sound like it could be big. The most obvious thing is the iTunes phone, but wouldn’t that be a Motorolla announcement and not an Apple one? Perhaps video iPod?

Is 1024 okay?
My take: designing for 1024px wide screens was an okay choice for ALA — because it suits their target audience. It’s probably not an okay choice for everyone. On the K-State website, which I think is representative of a wide range of different types of u
